Changes in Breast Forms from Time to Time

From puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, until menopause, women's breast forms can experience changes. In general, this change is natural, even though some consider it abnormal. Therefore, consider the following explanation regarding changes in breast shape.

The position of the female breast is located in front of the chest muscles. The breast itself is composed of several tissues, such as fat, connective tissue, blood vessels, and mammary glands. This mammary gland plays an important role in producing breast milk. Basically, the size and shape of each woman's breasts vary. This difference is usually influenced by the amount of fat and hormonal changes that occur along with the normal life cycle.

Development of Breast Forms
The following are the stages of changes in breast forms that occur during the life cycle, from puberty to reaching menopause:

  • Breast forms at puberty

When a woman enters puberty , her body will produce and release the hormone estrogen. The release of this hormone makes the breast shape that previously looks like a boy, will begin to grow and develop. This form change occurs because the estrogen hormone stimulates the mammary glands in the breast.

  • The shape of the air in the air is stretching

The production of estrogen and progesterone hormones will increase when you experience the menstrual cycle for the first time. The increase in both hormones triggers the growth and development of tissue in the breast. At this stage, the breasts will appear bigger and denser. Changes in breast shape occur as a preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. But if the pregnancy does not occur, then the breast will return to normal size.

  • Breast shape during pregnancy

During pregnancy, changes in levels of pregnancy hormones , such as the hormone progesterone, estrogen, and prolactin, cause changes in the shape of the breast in preparation for breastfeeding. The mammary glands will be stimulated to produce breast milk during labor.

  • Breast shape during breastfeeding

When you are breastfeeding, the hormones estrogen and progesterone will decrease. The decrease in these two hormones will be replaced with the hormone prolactin. The prolactin hormone plays a role in producing breast milk, making the breasts become denser, firmer, and bigger. In addition, the breast nipples will also enlarge and the color of the areoles become darker. After a period of breastfeeding, the breast tissue will shrink again and return to the breast shape before you give birth.

  • Breast form during menopause

Atrophy or wasting of the breast occurs when a woman is 40 to 50 years old, when she reaches menopause. This breast reduction occurs when the estrogen hormone decreases. As a result, the mammary gland and breast tissue lose elasticity so that it will become loose. In addition to sagging, other changes in the breast that can occur when entering menopause are the appearance of stretch marks, widening the distance between the breasts, and the appearance of the breasts to be flatter. Some people consider breastfeeding to be one of the factors that make the breasts loose. However, actually the breasts are down due to various other factors, such as a drastic change in body weight, too much heavy physical activity, and smoking habits.

Unbalanced form changes in both breasts can cause breast asymmetry. Breast asymmetry is a condition in which one breast has a larger size than the other. Although not an alarming condition, you still have to accept the symptoms that accompany it. Moreover, if one breast becomes bigger suddenly.

In general, changes in breast forms are natural and harmless. But as we get older, the risk of developing certain diseases of the breast will increase. For that, do your own breast examination (BSE) and breast examination to the doctor periodically, to be aware and detect early if there are abnormalities.
