How to Stop Hiccups Effectively

Hiccup or in English is called hiccup is a phenomenon involving the nervous system and breathing which until now has not known the exact cause.
The term hiccup appears and is used by people to mimic the sound produced during hiccups, while the other name, singultus, comes from the Latin singult which means to breathe when someone sobbing.
When hiccups, what happens is the contraction of the respiratory muscles, namely the diaphragm and the muscles between the ribs - which causes the movement to inhale but suddenly followed by closing the glottis (airway valve) abnormally so that a distinctive sound of hiccups is heard.
Usually hiccups appear 4-60 times / minute at fairly regular intervals and last only a few minutes, but sometimes hiccups last more than 48 hours and can be up to days.
Hiccups can be experienced by anyone, the fetus in the womb, children and also adults can all experience it.

Causes of hiccups

Hiccups are usually caused by a full stomach condition. Here are some factors that make the stomach feel full:
  1. Eat too much.
  2. Eat too fast.
  3. Drink too much alcohol.
  4. Swallow too much air.
  5. Smoke.
  6. Sudden temperature changes in the stomach, such as drinking hot drinks and then eating hot.
  7. Emotional conditions like stress or joy.
In diagnosing hiccups, the doctor will usually do a physical examination, see a medical record, and if necessary, investigations such as endoscopy or CT scan will be performed.Further examination is needed to find out the exact cause and treatment of the condition you are experiencing.

How to get rid of hiccups

There are many ways you can do to get rid of hiccups. Theoretically, the principle is to interrupt the hiccup reflex curve. Here are some ways to overcome hiccups, including:
1. High levels of carbon dioxide in the blood can paralyze hiccups. The trick is to breathe in a paper bag. Blow and breathe 10 times strong enough to face red.
Do it quickly and try to tightly close the paper bag so that no air goes into it. This condition makes the air that is inhaled a lot is air containing carbon dioxide.
2. The way to remove hiccups by increasing other levels of carbon dioxide is to hold your breath as long as possible, then swallow when the hiccups are felt to come. Do this 2-3 times then take a deep breath and start again.
3. Others suggest holding your breath as long as possible then remove and hold for as long as possible, or hold your breath with your head held up.
4. Swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar can stop hiccups in a few minutes. Allegedly, sugar in the mouth will send a signal through nerve fibers that will interfere with the hiccup reflex arch.
5. Drink water in a bent position, light massage with index fingers on both sides of the neck, or take a deep breath and drink 10 sips of water when not breathing.
If the hiccups don't disappear within a few hours or even days, medical help such as the use of medicines is needed. Some medicines that can be used to remove hiccups include chlorpromazine, metoclopramide, baclofen, anticonvulsants (phenytoin, valproic acid, carbamazepine) as well as other drugs such as quinidine, and amitriptyline.
Of course the use of these drugs must be with the doctor's instructions, because these drugs have side effects that need to be watched out. Meanwhile, if hiccups are not caused by underlying conditions or drug reactions, the hiccups will usually subside on their own without the need for medical treatment.
